Emma Griffin 'Women, Men and Money in Victorian Britain'
20 April 2021, 17:30
The Victorian period is feted as a unique – if short-lived – moment of British greatness.  A period of sustained rises in GDP, real wages, and all other measurable elements of economic measurements.  But what did this period of ‘British greatness’ mean for women?  And, conversely, how does this picture of Victorian prosperity change if we include the female experience?  In this lecture, Emma Griffin puts the women and the family in the centre of the analysis, and in the process offers a very different history of Victorian Britain.

Elizabeth Bear 'How to Survive a Literary Life'
27 April 2021, 17:30
There’s a lot of information out there on how to perfect your work and seek publication. There’s not as much about how to deal with the stresses of writing for a living—inconsistent income streams, uncertainty, arbitrariness of the market, mental health issues, public exposure, professional jealousy, exploitative contracts, and more.

Dr Phoenix Alexander - Curating the Future: The Science Fiction Collections at the University of Liverpool
15 April 2021, 17:30
Dr. Alexander will introduce the science fiction collections at the University of Liverpool and discuss how scholarly research can be driven by, or at least supported via, archival research. He will also talk about his career path and how academic-adjacent positions may be an appealing option for graduate students.

David Blandy 'The World After: Art, Fantasy and Building Communities'
21 April 2021, 17:30
For this talk, David Blandy will talk about his art practice over the last twenty years, examining how we define ourselves through the stories and images around us, culminating in a series of works around community. He will relate how, working individually and in collaboration with artist Larry Achiampong, he has made video, installation and performance work that confronts Britain’s relationship with Empire, identity and race. Blandy will then explain how he is currently using the speculative and communal potential of fantasy and roleplay games to test the idea that in order to build a new society, we must first imagine it.
