Can Science Fiction Writers Really Save the World? (And can they get paid for doing it?)

William Gibson famously said, "The street finds its own uses for things." Project Ursula, a collaboration with the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), adapted speculative fiction techniques into a creative workshop for exploring the potential disruptive effects of emerging technologies—those "street" uses which Defence has struggled to anticipate. In this hands-on seminar, Dr Helen Marshall, the lead for Project Ursula, will demonstrate some of the creative activities used for the foresight workshop, then discuss more broadly what her team of creative writers learned about setting up contract research with industry.

The session is particularly relevant to academics working in creative arts, but all ARU colleagues, staff and PGR, are warmly welcomed. This session is supported by AHSS and organised via the ARU Centre for Science Fiction and Fantasy.
