It’s Not About the Gallery celebrates the work from Cambridge School of Art’s MA Fine Art and MA Printmaking graduating students.

Each of the 10 artists has a unique creative, cultural and geographic background but they are united by the belief that art cannot exist solely in the physical gallery space.

As a street artist Jon Revell’s work sits outside the immediate space of the Ruskin Gallery whilst Kate Green’s interactive and immersive work focuses on creating an experience rather than objects to observe.

Kate takes inspiration from the natural world; a theme that also appears in the work of other artists. Winner of the Sustainability Art Prize 2022, Sarah Strachan’s work ‘The Security Dilemma’ is inspired by a ‘collision of conversations between a field in Cambridgeshire (still recovering from the trauma of sugar beet harvesting in 2020, now sown with wheat), academics, archivists and volunteers at the World Soil Survey Archive and Catalogue (WOSSAC), materials held in the archive and the geopolitical issues in Ukraine and beyond. ’

Joe Dean’s work is also inspired by the interaction of nature and the manmade and the disjoint between memory, reality, and the subconscious.

Visitors to It’s Not About the Gallery will find much to explore from these engaging works which ask us questions about progress, threat, loss, memory, archive and more.
