'Merry-Go-Round' [Körhinta], dir. Zoltán Fábri (1956), was made during Imré Nagy’s government and set in 1953. Its story of star-crossed peasant lovers during the period of agricultural collectivisation has some of the energy and hope which characterised the period immediately before the October Uprising. It became an instant classic, using some pioneering filming and editing techniques, launching the career of the famous actress Mari Törőcsik, and causing many critics (including François Truffaut) to complain bitterly when it did not win the Palme d’Or at Cannes that year.
