HSS Research Seminar: Egypt’s New Republic after the Arab Uprising: The Dynamics of the new Authoritarian Social Contract
Events — Talk Helmore 201 & Microsoft Teams13 November 2023, 17:00
Research Seminar delivered by Dr Solava Ibrahim, Anglia Ruskin University. The aim of this talk is to examine the key developments in Egypt after the 2011 and 2013 Uprisings and to critically examine the reasons why a new authoritarian social contract was established under Al Sisi’s regime which forgoes socio-economic and political rights for stability. The paper also questions the sustainability of such an exclusive social contract which failed to fulfil people’s demands, especially in poor neighbourhoods.
Refreshments will be served from 4.30pm.
