HSS Research Seminar: The Power and Impact of Institutions on International Relations

Events — Talk Microsoft Teams
25 September 2023, 17:00

Research Seminar delivered by Dr Daniela Irrera, University of Catania. In this seminar, the impact of institutions on the international relations will be discussed, focusing on the relationship between intergovernmental organisations (IGOs) and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and their effect on security and conflict management.

It will consist of three parts. Firstly, institutions are theoretically investigated, in respect to relations with states and their influence on the global political agenda. Secondly, IGOs and NGOs are separately discussed as the most prominent examples of institutions provided with those functions and abilities for influencing global policies. Finally, their potential is particularly deepened in the global humanitarian system as an extremely sensitive field, in which policies, practices and norms are the result of the match and the collision between the governmental and the nongovernmental dimensions.
