Events — Talk ZOOM19 May 2021, 12:30
What's in the box? Using a mystery box of arts to explore veteran with visual impairment wellbeing.
Dr Hillary Engward
Senior Research Fellow, Veterans and Families Institute for Military Social Research
Tom Kersey
PhD student at Veterans and Families Institute for Military Social Research
This seminar presents an overview of pilot research, to date, between the Veterans and Families Research Institute (VFI) and the national charity, Blind Veterans UK (BVUK). BVUK run regular arts and crafts activities with visually impaired veterans, and the purpose of this research is to explore the impact of engaging in visual arts activities experiences and possible holistic wellbeing benefits of these activities. In this seminar, we present an overview of the concept of wellbeing in relation to visual impairment (civilian and veteran) and the current qualitative pilot research using an innovative ‘mystery box’ of arts approach with visually impaired blind veterans.
This presentation is collaborative between Dr Hilary Engward and Tom Kersey (PhD student) at Veterans and Families Institute for Military Social Research.
Dr Hilary Engward leads on various social science research projects in the VFI exploring the experience of military veterans, physical impairment, and wellbeing and writes widely across veteran, health, ethics and education disciplines. Hilary supervises Tom Kersey, whose current PhD is exploring narrative of veterans living with chronic pain, and has previous experience in art therapy and veteran mental health. Together, Hilary and Tom are collaborating with BVUK to inquire into the relationship between arts and wellbeing in the veteran community.
