Sonam Maliyakkal Salam
Interior Design Innovation
I am Sonam, pursuing an MA Interior Design Innovation. Hailing from Kerala in the southern part of India, I draw deep inspiration from its cultural and historical rich homeland.
Kerala, known for its lush farms, natural materials, and sustainable way of life, has profoundly shaped my worldview and creative approach. My designs and concepts embody the region's emphasis on simplicity, sustainability, and connection to nature. Influenced by Kerala's traditional values and innovative uses of organic materials, my work reflects a unique blend of heritage and modernity, creating designs that resonate with authenticity, creativity, and an eco-conscious mindset.
The Human and more than-Human Urban Gardening Project at 55 Emery Street aims to transform an underutilized urban space into a vibrant, sustainable garden that fosters community engagement and biodiversity. The proposal includes revitalizing the front garden using innovative materials like soil ink for 3D-printed soil structures and cane furniture for sustainable seating. The design integrates green infrastructure, such as vertical gardens and aeroponic systems, to maximize space and support urban agriculture.
The ground floor, named Eco Harvest, will serve as a community hub, offering educational workshops and volunteer opportunities in sustainable living and gardening. Collaboration with local organizations, such as Mill Road 4 People, ensures the design meets community needs and encourages active participation. By combining modern technology with traditional values, this project enhances urban living, promotes ecological resilience, and sets a precedent for future sustainable developments on Mill Road.
