Creative Human-Machine Collaboration: Screenwriting with Generative AI

Coslett 117, Anglia Ruskin University28 November 2024, 18:00 - 19:30

Join us for a screening of a British Academy funded short drama film a little of the heart (2024, 13 mins), exploring our creative and interpersonal relationship with AI. The screening will be followed by a short presentation of the ideas and processes behind the project from filmmaker-researcher, Dr Sarah Gibson Yates.

Recent developments in generative AI technology are disrupting the creative industries in unforeseen ways. In many sectors, embodied physical processes are being replaced with the virtual through the development and integration of AI technologies, driven by marketing promises of increased productivity and lower costs.  But at what cost to authenticity, human connection, craft, or the meaningful exchange of ideas and emotions born of lived experience?

While there may be concerns about the changes taking place, we must also ask what might be gained by working more closely with AI? Are there valuable more-than-human perspectives to discover? What can we learn by working closely with the AI (alien) mind? Should we all lean into learning how to become, what AI expert Ethan Mollick calls, ‘the human in the loop’ (Mollick, 2024).

This project represents a creative investigation into what it might mean to be a human in the loop as a creative fiction filmmaker working with generative AI.  It explores AI-interfaced writing processes and critically evaluates the outputs, but it is also a personal project where I have sought ways to preserve a sense of imaginative and feeling response to the subject and characters of an emerging screen narrative seeking to better understand human-machine relations.
