Online talk 'The Reception of Byron's Works in Hungary at the Beginning of the 20th Century'

This talk will look at some characteristic responses to Byron's works from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It will pay special attention to changing images of the Byronic hero from before and after the Great War.

Dr. Miklós Péti is Head of the Institute of English Studies, Department of Literary and Cultural Studies in English, Károli Gáspár University, Budapest. His publications include Paradise from behind the Iron Curtain: Reading, Translating and Staging Milton in Communist Hungary (UCL Press, 1922), which is available online as an open-access PDF. In 2024 he published in the Times Literary Supplement (August 9) his discovery of a long-lost translation of Byron’s Childe Harold’s Pilgrimage by the great Hungarian novelist and poet Dezső Kosztolányi.
