It’s Shakespeare, but not as you know it.
In 2023, Shakespeare's Globe released a series of five short films produced by students from across the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, Education and Social Sciences at ARU to coincide with their Summer productions.
These sixty second Shakespeare films explored how the world’s most famous playwright can inspire, in short form film, in the modern digital world. Each film includes some text from one of Shakespeare's original plays, before jumping in bold, imaginative new directions.
The collaboration began in 2021, with ARU students producing five films on the theme of climate change, despite challenging Covid restrictions.
All the films are available on the Shakespeare's Globe website and were promoted on their social media and YouTube channels. The project involved ARU students visiting The Globe theatre in London, and working with practitioner Kevin Bennett to ensure the final films feature high production values.
A Midsummer Nightmare and Dress Rehearsal were accepted to screen at Cambridge Film Festival 2023, while Wicked Dreams and A Midsummer Nightmare were selected for the equally prestigious Stratford Upon Avon Film Festival. Wicked Dreams also won a Silver medal at the UK Student Film Festival 2023 in Edinburgh.
