Desire as a Curse. In the world we live in, emotions and desires intertwine, forming inescapable entanglements. Whether in the struggles of love and pain, or in the depths of jealousy and anger, these emotions can gradually transform into an unbreakable bond. Through this project, I explore how desire turns into a curse by presenting the stories of four women from different cultures, showing how their obsessions ultimately lead to their downfall. Each story and image attempts to convey this central idea: desire may be inevitable, but it can also become the force that destroys us.

I graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Animation from the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and later obtained a master’s degree in Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art. I specialize in illustration and animation and have a passion for artistic exploration in the fields of literature and history.

This project explores how desire, from different cultural perspectives, can evolve into a curse. It focuses on four female characters:

  • Lin Daiyu from Chinese literature, who succumbs to sorrow and love, eventually leading to her demise.

  • Salome from Jewish culture, who takes a life in order to gain her lover's attention.

  • Medusa from Greek mythology, whose curse and anger result in harming others.

  • Rokujō no Miyasudokoro from Japanese culture, whose jealousy transforms her into a vengeful spirit.

Each story portrays complex emotional struggles, with the women’s love or obsessive desire transforming into a destructive force. Ultimately, the project reflects how emotions can spiral into desires, which may become burdens or even curses, and raises the question of whether we can truly free ourselves from these desires.
