My name is Alexandria Alessi and I’m an illustrator based in Hertfordshire.
My work is very experimental and playful, I like using mixed media materials, bold colour combinations, and mark making. I work with a variety of subjects, but I am particularly interested in the human form and themes of self-discovery, identity, and feminism. I am also fascinated by child-like, playful clowns and circuses, I bring the theme of ‘identity’ to my work on clowns through the idea of clowning and clown personas – how emotions can be expressed through clown costume and makeup.
Most commonly I draw using embroidery and painting, I really like creating functional and wearable art, tactile pieces that can be treasured as gifts. My work is quite mixed due to my broad interests, I am really enjoying experimenting with them and building a portfolio that reflects me.
I created a project based on Walt Whitman’s poem ‘I Sing the Body Electric.’ I really wanted to focus solely on drawing all types of bodies and depicting the beauty of the human body, internal and external. By combining embroidery, painting, and drawing, I created a series of customised vintage lingerie to appreciate all bodies and the functions of all bodies, whilst promoting self-love.
