Illustrated cut out of goldilocks in house surrounded by trees

A still from my crankie theatre project telling the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears.

Hi. I'm Alice an illustrator from Bedfordshire!

A lot of my work is inspired by nature and the natural world as well as folklore, mythology, history, and fairytales. I primarily work in gouache on paper but also frequently explore other media including drawing, embroidery, crochet, and watercolour. Detail is very important to my work and most of my illustrations are completed around A5 size to facilitate this. I heavily research my subject matter to enable me to include elements of symbolism and to have a high understanding of my subject matter.

My primary project was based on the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I chose to make a moving panorama or "crankie theatre" from a craft box. I painted a front for the box and a 7ft long scroll using gouache paint.

This was the 7ft scroll I painted and printed to go inside the crankie theatre A postcard design based on the folklore of a black dog called Black Shuck in East Anglia The embroidered cover of a concertina book on how to cure a horse of the medieval disease known as elfshot A postcard design based on the legend surrounding a half-wolf, half-man creature in the folklore of the Shetland Islands A fold-out calendar displaying the pagan and celtic festivals throughout the year and their associations A gouache painting based on Romanian folklore, muma pădurii lives in the woods and is the protector of animals and plants. For this project I made a jumper to commemorate the cockle women of Penclawdd in South Wales as well as the process and history of cockle picking in South Wales. The jumper is made using tunisian crochet.
