My name is Kemiyah Butterfield. I am an undergraduate on the BA Fashion Design at Anglia Ruskin University. Originally, I’m from Bermuda, a small tropical island located in the Atlantic Ocean.
This is my third year and within these past few years, I was able to learn a myriad of new information and new skills. One of these is being able to develop my pattern making ability in terms of cutting and drawing pattern blocks to fit the outline of my garments, as well as where I can locate other sources for similar patterns. Ex; WGSN.
Now that I have been given these new resources and skills, I plan to return home to Bermuda to build on my animation skills and possibly reapply to ARU to receive a degree in Animation. Additionally, I also wish to find a slow start-up regarding my career in fashion. I plan to join a company as a designer and hopefully work my way up the ladder. Moreover, I do plan to utilize the additional animation skills in collaboration with my fashion design skills as well in the future.
This SS25/26 RTW womenswear project brings to life symmetrical lines that add depth to the garment. This project will prioritize repeating patterns using pictures and snapshots taken from different landscapes and buildings from Bermuda.
Heat Dazed is a collection that derives the cultural inspiration of Bermuda. This collection will utilize shape and line techniques from similar brands such as to bring forth the intricate and unique designs of Bermudian architecture as well as taking inspiration based on 70’s fashion and aesthetics.
My reasoning behind this theme is because Bermudian fashion is greatly unrecognized and is easily swept under the rug in comparison to other cultures. The only exceptions usually being the performative garbs worn by Gombeys and trademark ‘Bermuda shorts’. However, these attributes are sometimes not as relevant as other of Bermuda’s landmarks that hold most popularity amongst tourists, ex, Bermuda beaches and cuisine. Therefore, I decided to utilize my last trimester at ARU towards bringing forth Bermuda’s niche fashion representation.
