A scene from my animation “Link”

Hiya! I’m Aliah Masangcay, a British/Filipino animator and illustrator living in the UK.  After uni I would like to continue my path working in either in the animation or illustration industry. I want to follow my dream of doing something I love, which is drawing!

My animation focuses on the struggles of a young Filipino girl trying to fit in and make friends. It begins with her visit to see her family in the Philippines, accompanied by her mum. Despite feeling nervous at first, she is exposed to a warm, welcoming environment and lively Filipino culture. The theme of acceptance and belonging is explored, however upon returning to the UK she becomes nervous again. Adjusting to a new environment is a struggle and discouraging when she is turned away as she tries to make friends. In this animation, I draw upon my own experiences and struggles of trying to fit in and make friends.

As the girl slowly retreats into her shell again, the girl she made a connection with at the airport decides to befriend her. She ends up having a great first day at school and re-tells her stories to her mum at the end of the day. Through this animation I wanted to show that being different and embracing your culture is not something to be ashamed about. I am proud to be a Filipino living in the UK, keeping my values and remembering my roots is what makes me who I am today.
