Illustration of a skull with the word Substance

Substance poster – This is the poster for the game concept that I developed from the objects I made, encompassing the collective feel of the project.

My name is Ben; I am an illustrator interested in world building and storytelling through objects. I work with all types of media and have been developing a method of expansive worldbuilding that builds a foundation for many ideas to coexist in the same world.

This project was made through a method of world building where one project informs the next, which builds the narrative naturally from itself.

I started with a single image and developed it into a collection of information that the audience can piece together to uncover a story without being explicitly told what is going on.

By the end of the project, I had created a concept for a video game with many visuals that help tell the story.

Gif of a sign that says Containment Breach
Sign that says Biohazard Warning
A poster with a two headed dog that says Caution! Keep it leashed
A plate with unidentifiable objects on it
Containment breach – This was the first image I made acting as a foundation, it is a floorplan of a bunker inspired by hand drawn mazes and organic shapes of coral. Biohazard sign – Creating the materials I felt they might be experimenting with; I printed this design onto metal and rusted it for an authentic weathered look. Caution poster – Adding to the environment of the bunker I created a caution poster describing some of the experiments taking place and potential consequences, inspired by the containment breach. Mutated sample – I created this sample as a visual for how the biohazardous materials are reacting and what might be going on with these experiments.
