Learning to trust myself was the biggest stepping stone to my authenticity. Unsure of my next steps I took a leap of faith and followed my heart.

I am Gabriela Barszczewska. Throughout my three years of Interior Design I challenged the norms of what a space can offer: no white walls (though my drawings may be); configurations of internal layouts (that enhance a space’s usability); blending the idea of indoor and outdoor spaces (crafting each design sustainably), etc…

This course has lit a dream in me of becoming a spatial storyteller. I follow my heart patiently and spill my soul out carefully onto every blank page later translating my intuitive, automatic drawings into emotional journeys. My passion is to create new and unconventional designs of spaces and objects which stand on the foundation of form, preservation and functionality. I am inspired by nature’s organic shapes and my motherland Poland. My designs always listen, play, and respond to my client’s justified needs creating their own private sanctuary through my hands. I love to make my audience feel things, not just see them; I am a story teller.

When I wanted to tell the story of The Print Room I wanted it to feel like magic.

My inspiration for The Albion Press Printing Studio stemmed from the industrialism The Museum of Technology radiated and the adjacent flow of the river.

The quote from ancient maps: "Hic svnt dracones!" inspired me to not limit my thinking just to the River Cam as "all rivers lead to the sea" - Ecclesiastes 1:7.

My Dragon Design set the standard for my ambition which carried into my gigantic, industrial ship.

My aims were:

  • To fabricate a safe and stable environment for artists in need of an active studio, preserving traditional techniques of printing, as well as creating a new financial model to uplift the museum’s funding.

  • To awe my audience when emerging from the darkness of The Ash Tunnel into the courtyard gazing upon an adventurous journey which transitioned The Print Room into The Albion Press Printing Studio.

  • To tell the story of the printing presses, to dedicate an artefact representing life on the river and symbolise my pilgrimage of skill development evolving into a narrative based designer creating something I can be proud of.

The Foundation - Plans: Adapting The Winch Engine Building into my design was a defining moment in my process creating a lift to break my enormous idea into more navigable sections.

Dragon On The River - Ambition. I pride myself in my imaginative nature when it comes to telling stories. Feeling a place means much more to me than simply seeing it.Revitalisation - Sympathy. My designs explore organic forms within my sites, to uplift their eco-systems and create sustainable solutions. E.g. Collecting rain water and filtering it into the drying river. The Adventure Begins - With Empathy. Feeling the industrialism of the museum, seeing the flowing nature of the river, meditating on expanding The Print Room, I dreamed of The Albion Press. The Journey - Is Just Beginning. The insertion of The Albion Press Printing Studio preserves the original Print Room building where an artist's adventure begins and my design process ends.
