Illustration of four playing cards

Hello, I’m Meriel, a Cambridge-based illustrator and designer. My work focuses heavily on shape and tone, specifically black and white or monochrome pieces. I create using a range of media, but digital painting, lino cut, etching and pen drawing are where I feel most comfortable.

My aim when creating illustrative work is to evoke emotion in the viewer, specifically to add drama, tension or intrigue. When it comes to graphic design however I am more focused on bold, impactful compositions and colours specifically designed to lead the eye to the most important areas of the design.

Thematically I am inspired by the medieval era and the gothic aesthetic. A lot of my work draws inspiration from patterns and colours associated with these two visual genres.

My projects this year have been quite varied in subject matter, as I’ve tried to capture a range of interests and showcase a range of skills.
