'Once Upon a Leaf' - one of the illustrations from a self-directed book about a little fox and plants.

My name is Yueyi Yu. I specialise in creating narrative illustrations. My work explores how illustrations can be arranged in sequences, using rhythm, repetition, and variation to create connections between pictures and guide the viewer.

‘Once Upon a Leaf’ is a self-directed picturebook about a little fox Duffy, and plants. At first, Duffy was determined to succeed. But after studying hard and becoming a botanist, the little fox gradually realized that only by experiencing plants in person could one truly enjoy them. In the work, I combined electronic drawing and printmaking. All characters in the book are intaglio prints.

For my graduation project, I used zinc plate printmaking, my most proficient illustration medium, to create a series of ten narrative illustrations (Giselle) and a set of four-panel prints (The Four Junzi).I expressed my narrative illustration through printmaking, using texture, layering, and material techniques to construct and expand the visual story.
